Things can only get better

Apologies to Howard Jones. Or, I should say, apologies to you for bringing up bad songs from 1985. I have no idea why my brain does this to me. This is, I suppose, the price I am paying for sort of being able to sleep the last few days.
Right now, other than moments of hot-flush-inducing absolute terror I have when I flash on thinking about how horrible it will be flying with the cat (very unhappy, and I will have to go through security and deal with taking the cat out of the carrier and carrying him through, while also taking off my shoes AND proving to the TSA that my laptop is not a bomb) or wondering if all our stuff really has a chance of fitting in the space in the truck we have reserved, I am kind of OK. We have to get rid of a bike and some plants and pots and various things like that, and pack the dishes/bath stuff/clothes we have been using and haven’t packed yet, but things seem under control.
After a very bad Thursday things seemed to get better. Friday I talked to Dave Radius, Genius Floor Guy, and he informed me that he had been over to the house and had the exact wood we needed for our living room floor (a huge relief). The AC guy is moving some stuff around, and even though I think the living room window is a lost cause (we will have to do something visually creative there, I think) the upstairs bedroom and big duct disaster is being sorted out. I am not sure what to do about the windows in the dining room (I think the ducts will still impede on the framing) but that is a wait-and-see situation since I am not sure.
Yesterday I went to the vet, and then we took a carload of stuff over to the dump (we filled up the car so much we couldn’t take any of our hazardous waste over but we can make another run later). After that I closed my bank account, went to a Champagne tasting, got some more boxes for my wine, said goodbye to everyone at my favorite wine store, and spent quality time in the wine storage unit repacking/taping up my wine for shipping (and lamenting buying a magnum of Champagne, which seemed like a good idea before I tried to figure out how to pack it). It was a productive enough day that I didn’t even feel too guilty going to dinner with some friends even though I was a little out of it (and if your day includes a trip to the dump and Champagne tasting, well, what can you expect).
Today I hauled a bunch of plants out to a friend in Sacramento (and I hope she is still my friend after being showered with about fifteen plants, some looking a little raggedy) and said goodbye, sort of, there. I have been kind of trying to not say goodbye to people since it makes me all emotional, and also because in this day and age we have email and IM and SMS and it isn’t like I am headed off to the hinterlands to write once every three fortnights or something. However, I am still being dumb because I cried yesterday walking out of K&L, because I am going to miss it and the people there so much, and cried tonight driving into San Francisco over the Bay Bridge for what is probably the last time, and I even got choked up driving out to Sacramento and back when I saw the golden California hills off I-80 (looking a lot like that ) since I remember them blowing my mind about ten years ago when I saw them for the first time, on my way out here.
Anyway, my fragile emotional state aside, Kristin sent us some pictures of the redone floors on the first floor of the house, since Dave Radius told us our kitchen floors looked awful and I wanted to see if they were really awful or just awful if you are a floor person. Well, they are awful but I don’t think we will deal with redoing them right now (he can get us the wood for that if we need it). Anyway, they are all over in the usual place. I am wondering if I could take some TSP to the floors in the kitchen to clean them up a little more (works for iron stains just fine, but I am not sure about water). Or stain them gray. Or put cork down over it.
This week I think the fun really begins… the sink will go in in the bathroom, and the toilet, and the cabinets will start going in in the kitchen. It looks like the only thing we will be lacking when I get out there in a week and a half will be countertops and a kitchen sink.
