a barrel of this: house Our House

Weekend

The highlight of the weekend, housewise, has been a toss-up thus far.

Perhaps it was the trip out to the dump (bye bye, creepy, gross, and flimsy metal shelves from the basement) even though the dump is wily and difficult to find when Bates Road is closed.

Perhaps it was the purchase of a Yuppie trashcan (and bathroom mirror, which we really needed, at half off) at the Dog Days sale down at Home Rule yesterday.

Maybe it was buying some liriope to plant in our tire planters. I got a white/green variegated and a plain dark green to go with the yellow/green variegated one that was out there, so now we have a trio of liriope varieties. I need to plant some more stuff in the tires, too, but first things first. Liriope cracks me up because I classify it, with hosta, in a category I think of as old-lady-plants. I do like it, though, and figured if one type was growing happily in the tires, others should be okay, too, or at least require a minimum of care, which is what I am looking for right now. At least until I get my Northeastern Garden Book (I lived by my Western Garden Book before we left SF) and figure out a plan for the yard. I can barely remember what grows outside here after being away for so long.

We also got some much-needed whacking of weeds done in the back yard and Matt cut down a mystery tree that is trying to grow back there (this thing is a pain in the ass because it somehow is seeding itself all over our yards and I can’t figure out what it is although I have eliminated “standard poisonous weed”, which is what most of our problem plants are, and am now thinking “tree”). Our front porch is swept, even though the Astroturf is still the bane of Matt’s existence and does look dumb. I am resisting pulling it off until we have a plan for the porch because I have a feeling the plywood/wood combo we will find under it will be just as ugly as the Astroturf. Also, it is protecting the ply/wood (I admit that I might be making that up).

Now, things to figure out: 1- what is that damn plant (tree, leaves look like a birch or elm variety but I have to investigate more) that is trying to take over the yard and 2- how best to hang the bathroom mirror to not highlight the fact that the sink and light fixture are not centered because of pipes in the wall.

Also, I have to get dressed to go on my first trip to Frager’s which will be very exciting (we have keys to copy and many things to pick up, including glass, gardening stuff, s-hooks, and weatherstripping).
