a barrel of this: house Our House

Small steps back

So we have the sink and faucet now. The dishwasher and disposal were supposed to be worked on on Saturday, when the electricians were here, but it seems they spent all their time 1- drilling things into the back of the house and 2- breaking our AC (sort of).

They left suddenly around 5.30 (telling Matt “you can lock the back door now” and then just leaving without telling him anything) and Matt and I went to some friends’ house for dinner at around 6.30. He went to see some other friends at Temperance and I went home around 11-11.30. I didn’t notice at first, but when I was trying to read in bed I realized it was about 81 degrees and humid in the house and it wasn’t just me feeling hot. After about a half hour, when I noticed the temp had gone up two degrees, I realized it wasn’t some fluke and went to investigate. The AC downstairs was set to 73 but was 78. There were no fuses thrown on the panel even though I had my doubts about the unit being wired to it, and after some observation I noticed that while the inside air handler was running fine, the outside condenser was never coming on. Which explained why it was so warm and humid. It was time to dig up a flashlight and go outside and start digging around.

Well, I now know where the condenser gets its power…there is a small gray box out there at the back bottom of the house. Once you get it open, there is a black fuse thing (see, I can talk the talk) and it seems that the electricians had set it to OFF by flipping it. I switched it around and lo, after a few minutes, the unit outside came back on. It was interesting to note that the air in the house was considerably less humid less than 15 minutes later, and by the time Matt got home a little after 1, the house was reasonably cool. In fact, when he got upstairs, after walking home, he noted “It is nice and cool in here!”, to which I replied “You don’t even know the half of it.”

I sent the contractor an annoyed email and told him to tell the electricians to put things back when they are done (or at least tell us what they are up to). Today we are supposedly getting the dishwasher and disposal set up, but I have yet to hear if that will actually happen.

The guys are coming to take our radiators away to get cleaned up on Saturday, so the only other big thing on my list for this week is shower glass. The twine and liner look is starting to get old.

Also, we had an important moment last night…the first dinner cooked in the new house (funnily, even though we had the faucet on Saturday, we ate with friends that night, and then Sunday Matt had band practice and we had to buy actual food in a store to prep for being able to cook in so we ended up eating salads, and Monday night we had to go to Rasika, so FINALLY I got to cook last night. Nothing fancy, pasta with arugula and tomatoes and garlic and parmesan. I was finally able to start using up the half bottle of old wine I have in the fridge.
