a barrel of this: house Our House

1 year anniversary

Posted by Matthew Tue, 03 Jul 2007 15:36:00 GMT

As of tomorrow I’ll have lived back in DC for one year. K. has me beat by a few days as she flew out ahead with the cat while I drove our car across the U.S. of A. A fair number of people on both coasts have asked me about the neighborhood, the house, living back on the East coast, working remotely, etc. Do I like it? Do I hate it? I usually give the usual wishy-washy “Yeah, it’s great” answer because the honest answer would take longer than the amount of time those asking really want to spend delving into the specifics. Not that “great” is inaccurate or misleading but, it is a complicated situation and I tend to waffle a bit. So here is the long answer which I put here mainly to get myself clear on how I feel and so I can look back in a year and see if my opinions changed.

Welcome to DC

Posted by K Tue, 04 Jul 2006 15:46:00 GMT

After a very stressful last week wherein the movers (Movex: avoid them since they are brokers, not movers, and just as problematic as that might entail and everything you might read at the movingscam.com forums could indeed happen to you) told us they didn’t have a truck for us on the day they promised and there was scrambling and rescheduling and then the truck got dropped off the morning we were supposed to get it, anyway. We got the truck loaded and even though I don’t actually know where it is or have any tracking or anything, we are “promised” by Movex that it will show up here on July 7. I am not sure how much I believe that promise, but in the meantime I sit here in our friends’ house listening to the endless and annoying fireworks the people outside are setting off. And watching bad movies. I finally got more than 4 hours of sleep last night and am coming around to east coast time a little bit.

Things can only get better

Posted by K Mon, 19 Jun 2006 04:16:00 GMT

Apologies to Howard Jones. Or, I should say, apologies to you for bringing up bad songs from 1985. I have no idea why my brain does this to me. This is, I suppose, the price I am paying for sort of being able to sleep the last few days.

Right now, other than moments of hot-flush-inducing absolute terror I have when I flash on thinking about how horrible it will be flying with the cat (very unhappy, and I will have to go through security and deal with taking the cat out of the carrier and carrying him through, while also taking off my shoes AND proving to the TSA that my laptop is not a bomb) or wondering if all our stuff really has a chance of fitting in the space in the truck we have reserved, I am kind of OK. We have to get rid of a bike and some plants and pots and various things like that, and pack the dishes/bath stuff/clothes we have been using and haven’t packed yet, but things seem under control.

Dishwashers, and sorry, Squak

Posted by K Sun, 21 May 2006 21:39:00 GMT

The excitement in these parts lately is packing. Also, buying dishwashers and, as featured on the To Do List, agonizing over countertops.

Earlier this week, when the nice people at Squak told me that shipping the slabs from Washington state to DC would cost me almost a thousand dollars (which, combined with the actual cost of the slabs would have brought the cost of raw materials to over $2500), I realized that Squak was going to be a no go. If we were moving to Seattle, just maybe, but not in this case.

So countertop-wise I guess we are now between:

Cat transport

Posted by Matthew Thu, 20 Apr 2006 05:17:00 GMT

I think we actually have made a decision on the cat transportation front. But, before I cross it off the todo list I’ll document what we decided. After to talking to my sister who is a small animal vet I was a bit freaked out. She suggested we take Seymour in the cabin. Clearly she has never driven in a car with Seymour. If the howling doesn’t convince you to pull over the pathetic mewling makes you cry and the tears force you to pull over. No way am I subjecting a plane full of humans to that torture.

Checking the United web site we were able to confirm that they do have a pressurized cabin for your pet’s comfort. It is not however clear if that cabin is air conditioned. The airline can refuse to take your pet on your flight (period) and will if the heat at your destination or origination point is too severe. The temp here in San Francisco isn’t really a concern. But DC in July could certainly melt poor kitty. Therefore one of us will be flying direct with the cat on United leaving SFO in the early evening and arriving in DC in the late evening. We’ve yet to decide who is doing the driving. More on that in my next post “Human transport”.

New house, new blog

Posted by Matthew Sun, 04 Dec 2005 20:52:00 GMT

Time for a change of scenery. K. and I are picking up and moving back to Washington, DC. As I write this I can hardly believe it myself but, it is the truth. Apologies if you are a friend and this is news. We want to tell every friend directly but, perhaps this is better than finding out secondhand.

We hope to keep track of the first-time homeowner experience. Our new place needs a lot of renovations and we’ll be moving across the country for the second time in our lives. Therefore I suspect there will be plenty to share, discuss, and organize.

To that end you’ll find pictures and bookmarks that will soon enough be mostly house related in the sidebar.

With the physical change I’ve made a virtual change as well giving the Rails-based Typo blog software a try. We hope to use Ruby on Rails at work and this will give me some experience with it. More on that in a separate place soon (likely design.abarrelofthis.com or something similar).
