a barrel of this: house Our House

1 year anniversary

Posted by Matthew Tue, 03 Jul 2007 15:36:00 GMT

As of tomorrow I’ll have lived back in DC for one year. K. has me beat by a few days as she flew out ahead with the cat while I drove our car across the U.S. of A. A fair number of people on both coasts have asked me about the neighborhood, the house, living back on the East coast, working remotely, etc. Do I like it? Do I hate it? I usually give the usual wishy-washy “Yeah, it’s great” answer because the honest answer would take longer than the amount of time those asking really want to spend delving into the specifics. Not that “great” is inaccurate or misleading but, it is a complicated situation and I tend to waffle a bit. So here is the long answer which I put here mainly to get myself clear on how I feel and so I can look back in a year and see if my opinions changed.

Ernesto stole my phone

Posted by Matthew Thu, 14 Sep 2006 20:53:00 GMT

Our land line phone hasn’t worked since Tropical depression Ernesto hit over Labor day weekend. The line was dead when we returned from vacation. It came back for a day or two then went dead again. K. called Verizon and they sent a guy yesterday. But, miraculously it started working before the repairman arrived. Then when we awoke this morning, the line was dead again. Fun!

So I decided to get with the program and buy a VoIP enabling device called PhoneGnome. It uses your broadband connection to make a VoIP call. You can choose one of their plans or a plan from a provider that supports SIP (there are many). If your broadband is down or you are calling 911, it uses your regular phone line. Hopefully it will not care much about us not having a working phone line most days. We’ll see.

More local excitement

Posted by K Sat, 12 Aug 2006 00:41:00 GMT

Well, the Shopping Cart o’ Trash is only a hollow memory, since it is now empty (albeit still in the alley, waiting to be filled up with more trash!) but the Enormo Bin in our alley is still there, overflowing and disgusting. I guess I will make the second call to 727-1000 next week and give them my “tracking number” for the issue. The whole tracking number thing cracks me up, since the woman I talked to last time couldn’t tell me what, when, or how the problem was going to be solved. I am very glad that they are tracking the ambiguity!

This Old DC House

Posted by Matthew Sat, 13 May 2006 18:38:00 GMT

My parents let us know that This Old House has a project house in Shaw, DC. So of course we’ve been watching. This Old House is doing the renovations on behalf of a non-profit named Mi Casa that buys houses from the city, restores them, and then sells the house to a low income family (houses go for under $300,000). My parents of course wanted to magically alter our tax bracket and make us eligible. Seeing as how we are severely over our renovation budget I have been considering dropping in on Norm and . . . okay, well, kidnapping him. I know, it’s Norm. We don’t kidnap the master carpenter. But think how nicely he’d restore our banister. Anyway, a boy can dream.

The series just restarted on our PBS station a week ago so if you’re interested you can see it from the start. If Norm fails to appear in the final episodes this post will self-destruct.

Olney Ale House

Posted by Matthew Sat, 13 May 2006 18:05:00 GMT

One of my new responsibilities, one that I am actually excited about as opposed to terrified of, is that of Temperance Hall web master. The site is rising to the top of Google’s search results which is reassuring. I started a flickr tag, temperancehalldc, which someone contributed to and so I followed it to Hook and Ladder Beer which they just so happen to serve at one of K’s favorite places: the Olney Ale House.

I believe we only made it out there twice, it is not exactly close by, but K and I both have very fond memories of the place. They serve a few vegetarian sandwiches but that memories are of the bread. The fresh molasses bread. Sooo good. And the beer. Mmmmmm. I’d trek out there for the bread and beer alone.
