a barrel of this: house Our House

Slow going

Posted by K Mon, 14 Aug 2006 22:21:00 GMT

Well, the house-related excitement of the weekend consisted of scrubbing the floor and wall tile in the bathroom (with vinegar water), drying it off, and then tediously painting over all the grout lines with grout sealer. The good thing is that our grout is now sealed. The bad thing is that it took forever, was so tedious Matt opted to do dishes instead of sealing grout, and I think I ruined one of my watercolor brushes in the process. No pictures, because sealed grout is about as exciting as unsealed grout.

Medicine Cabinet 1, Peel Away 0

Or, why maybe I will suddenly decide “shabby chic”, which usually makes me roll my eyes when I see it on eBay, is okay.

Hooray for tile

Posted by K Mon, 12 Jun 2006 02:13:00 GMT

Kristin just sent us some new pictures of the house, so we can see more of the duct fun, and the bathroom tile (which is moving along at light speed, it seems). Check out a few I grabbed from her and put up, over here.

The agony and the ecstasy

Posted by K Thu, 08 Jun 2006 05:08:00 GMT

Well, today was a day of highs and lows. Actually, it started out good and ended up bad. So, not really highs and lows, but more of a slippery slope into misery.

The good: THE DAMN TILE IS HERE. Thanks to our friend S and her trusty Golf, (and under the disbelieving eyes of the tile guys who thought it was impossible to put all that tile in a Golf and drive it into DC and, uh, I guess we should have sent Jorge to get it in his truck), the tile is now safely in the house. She even carried some in. We sent grout (yes, we shipped 16 pounds of grout across the country because the alternative was too tiring to consider) on Monday so grout will be there very soon.

Also, I have a ticket on a plane that will get me into DC at 10.33 PM on the 29th of June (and supposedly the house will actually be mostly done at that point). I am usually happy about this, although right now the thought makes me want to cry.

The reason I want to cry: the AC ductwork. Right now I think the AC guy is crazy and I have no idea what the hell he was doing when he put in some of the ducting. I understand that not all of it could be put in the walls the way he wanted. That is fine. What is not fine is the enormous and crooked double duct in our living room, that, when framed in, will obscure some of the doorway trim behind drywall. Also, an upstairs bedroom has that problem with some trim at the top of a door. Beyond that, there appears to be a (crooked) thermostat installed where there are going to be cabinets on the kitchen/dining room wall. Check out the horribleness here.

Sigh. I sent Jorge a What The Hell (I said it all as nicely as I could) email and I guess now I will go sleep fret.

Excitement knows no bounds

Posted by K Sun, 14 May 2006 03:09:00 GMT

This is the thrilling weekend that belongs to the homeowner: a trip to the tile store, an aborted trip to look at soapstone, and a trip to IKEA wherein cabinets were not ordered (as planned) since it seems that an IKEA in California is unable to fax an order for me to an IKEA in Maryland.

Almost done with the bathroom

Posted by K Wed, 03 May 2006 05:45:00 GMT

I just finally bought the toilet (Toto Aquia, hooray), the faucet (Delta Lockwood in chrome), the sink (American Standard Retrospect), the valves for said sink (some Brasstech stuff), and a toilet seat cover for said toilet (the Toto oval elongated Softclose dealie). Thank you to MI-5 (the BBC show known as Hot Spies in this household) for making all this less painful by distracting me just enough while forking over hundreds of dollars for this stuff.

Bathroom junk

Posted by K Sun, 29 Jan 2006 22:57:00 GMT

Trying to figure out what to do with the bathroom, which is definitely behind the kitchen on my fret list, but still worrisome. Meaning I don’t wake up at 4.30 in the morning worrying about it, but I still think about it a lot. Moreso now that the Kitchen Dilemma is as solved as it is going to be.

The myriad small bathroom dilemmas are these:

Sinks: Vanities are kind of ugly unless you spend a million dollars. Pedestal sinks are okay, but have very little room (I hate being in the process of using a jar or tube of something and having nowhere to put it for a minute).

Tubs/showers: The modern 5 foot long and 30 inch wide bathtub is useless for a real bath if you are tall. However, pedestal/clawfoot tubs are a pain to use for showers. We don’t have enough room for a separate tub/shower setup. I am fearful of eliminating the tub altogether.

Toilets: No real issues here. I like dual-flush toilets because I am a treehugger. One that is easy to clean, ideally.

Things we need to decide on and what I am thinking right now (subject, of course, to veto and debate):

Sink – I kind of like the whole boarding school style of this one, and even though I don’t love the glass shelf, it will be useful. Also, it has some area on top where we can put things. AND, integrated hand towel rack!

Sink faucet – I am not set on anything here. Something along these lines, I guess. I can’t get too crazy over bathroom faucets.

Toilet – I should probably consider other toilets, but am kind of in love with this one. It’s plain, has a dual flush setup, and is made by the best toilet manufacturer, Toto. Not sure how it will look with the sink.

Tub/shower – No idea here. Something cheap, and white, I guess.

Tub/shower faucet – Again, I don’t care much here, although I would like a single lever deal for hot/cold/etc. Can’t get too excited about these, either.

Lighting. No clue. Maybe this or this? I really like this but it is all wrong for everything else in the room. I usually prefer three-light over two or four, and like lights that point up over down, but there are always exceptions.

Oh, and then there is stuff you never think about normally, like towel bars/racks and toilet paper holders. I guess simple is better here, too ( like this, ha. Although if there is too little adornment things WILL end up looking like a boarding school bathroom.
