Let there be light

There’s nothing like having a party to finally motivate you to do something like hang the lamps that you have had around for the last three months but have been afraid to put up because electricity is scary.

Hooray for heat

Posted by K Fri, 03 Nov 2006 01:20:00 GMT

Sooo, the latest fun has been heating, as mentioned before. We have a heat pump and could probably get through the winter on it but who can’t wait to hook up the stinky but pretty radiators and push hot water through them, making them more stinky (albeit useful and energy efficient)? Us! So we are in the get-a-new-boiler business.

Kookoo for Rococo

Posted by K Tue, 31 Oct 2006 23:44:00 GMT

So exciting things have been going on, which I did document via Flickr a few days ago: we got the radiators back. And they look great! There is the small problem of one not fitting where it should because of a duct (the neverending Curse of the Ducts: I understand an elbow joint or two should take care of it so it isn’t the end of the world) but other than that, we can’t let the facts that we have yet to paint a thing and don’t have a boiler deter us from getting them installed. Anyway, I can’t stop looking at them and thinking that The Stripping Workshop is the best place ever. I don’t have a picture of it since I just noticed it Sunday night, but it says “ROCOCO” at the bottoms of them and I guess that was the model/style…they certainly are Rococo.

Small steps back

Posted by K Wed, 23 Aug 2006 12:47:00 GMT

So we have the sink and faucet now. The dishwasher and disposal were supposed to be worked on on Saturday, when the electricians were here, but it seems they spent all their time 1- drilling things into the back of the house and 2- breaking our AC (sort of).

More local excitement

Posted by K Sat, 12 Aug 2006 00:41:00 GMT

Well, the Shopping Cart o’ Trash is only a hollow memory, since it is now empty (albeit still in the alley, waiting to be filled up with more trash!) but the Enormo Bin in our alley is still there, overflowing and disgusting. I guess I will make the second call to 727-1000 next week and give them my “tracking number” for the issue. The whole tracking number thing cracks me up, since the woman I talked to last time couldn’t tell me what, when, or how the problem was going to be solved. I am very glad that they are tracking the ambiguity!

The highlight of the weekend, housewise, has been a toss-up thus far.

Catching up

Posted by K Wed, 02 Aug 2006 02:36:00 GMT

Some days it seems like we are getting nowhere, but we are always doing something (even if that something is returning something to IKEA or going to The Container Store for the millionth time) so I am not sure why our efforts feel so fruitless. The contractor disappeared for a while (but has since made a reappearance) so in the meantime we have done a bunch of random things, some things he was supposed to do, and some things that we just needed or wanted to do.

House photos

Posted by Matthew Sat, 15 Jul 2006 21:54:00 GMT

I posted some “after” pictures taken today. The house is starting to shape up though as you can see from the images we have plenty of unpacking to do. K did an excellent job of creating a make-shift kitchen and we stocked the fridge yesterday. I learned today that scraping two layers of paint off of both sides of a window pane is quite tedious and tiring. Time to get a heat gun.

We had some heart breaking news on Thursday that I won’t go into here. It made the house go from albatross to salvation. At least we have a massive project to keep our hands and minds occupied. At some point I’ll stop and deal with this devastating news but for now I’ll keep scraping away at paint.

Welcome to DC

Posted by K Tue, 04 Jul 2006 15:46:00 GMT

After a very stressful last week wherein the movers (Movex: avoid them since they are brokers, not movers, and just as problematic as that might entail and everything you might read at the movingscam.com forums could indeed happen to you) told us they didn’t have a truck for us on the day they promised and there was scrambling and rescheduling and then the truck got dropped off the morning we were supposed to get it, anyway. We got the truck loaded and even though I don’t actually know where it is or have any tracking or anything, we are “promised” by Movex that it will show up here on July 7. I am not sure how much I believe that promise, but in the meantime I sit here in our friends’ house listening to the endless and annoying fireworks the people outside are setting off. And watching bad movies. I finally got more than 4 hours of sleep last night and am coming around to east coast time a little bit.
